What Does the Bible Say About Ghosts?

The short answer: The Bible never describes ghosts haunting houses the way movies do. It teaches that the dead don't wander the earth (Ecclesiastes 9:5; Hebrews 9:27), warns that spiritual encounters can be deceptive (2 Corinthians 11:14), and clearly tells people not to try contacting the dead (Deuteronomy 18:10–12). The one famous exception — King Saul consulting a medium at Endor (1 Samuel 28) — is presented as an act of disobedience born of desperation, not something to imitate.

Ecclesiastes 9:5KJV
"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten."
What this meansScripture pictures death as a rest, not as spirits lingering around the living. The dead aren't watching from the hallway.
Hebrews 9:27KJV
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"
What this meansOne death, then judgment — there's no wandering in-between state where ghosts get stuck.
Luke 24:39KJV
"Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have."
What this meansWhen the risen Jesus appeared, the disciples' first thought was "ghost!" He didn't deny spirits exist — He proved His resurrection was physical, not phantom.
2 Corinthians 11:14KJV
"And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light."
What this meansNot every spiritual encounter is what it appears to be. The Bible's counsel is discernment, not curiosity.
Deuteronomy 18:11–12KJV
"Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee."
What this meansTrying to contact the dead is off-limits — not because the spiritual world isn't real, but precisely because it is, and it's dangerous ground.
1 John 4:1KJV
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."
What this meansTest spiritual experiences rather than chasing them. Curiosity about the supernatural should always run through discernment.
