What Does the Bible Say About Near-Death Experiences?
The short answer: The Bible doesn't use the term "near-death experience," but Paul describes being "caught up" to heaven while unsure whether he was in his body (2 Corinthians 12:2–4) — and he was told some things were "not lawful to utter." Scripture affirms life after death while staying humble about the details: "Eye hath not seen... the things which God hath prepared" (1 Corinthians 2:9). Whatever glimpses people report, the Bible's promised destination is clear.
2 Corinthians 12:2, 4KJV
"I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven... How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter."
What this meansThe closest biblical parallel to an NDE — and Paul himself refused to build a doctrine on the details. Some things, he says, aren't ours to broadcast.
1 Corinthians 2:9KJV
"But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him."
What this meansHeaven exceeds description — which fits why NDE accounts always seem to strain language. The reality is bigger than the report.
John 14:2–3KJV
"In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."
What this meansJesus' own description of the afterlife: prepared, personal, and certain. A place made ready, by Someone who is coming back.
Luke 16:22KJV
"And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;"
What this meansIn Jesus' story of the rich man and Lazarus, death is a carried journey, not an end — angels escort, not abandonment.
Philippians 1:21, 23KJV
"For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain... having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:"
What this meansPaul calls death "far better" — there's no fear in his expectation, only anticipation of being with Christ.
Revelation 21:4KJV
"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."
What this meansWhatever glimpses people report, this is the promised destination: no tears, no death, no pain. The former things passed away.
